Central and West Java in Indonesia gets First Talking ATMs

On This Page

This is a post about the first Talking ATMs for blind people in Central and West Java, Indonesia. Talking ATMs allow people who cannot see an ATM screen to independently use the machine. Audible prompts for all transactions are delivered privately through a headset.

International Talking ATM installations remind us that advocacy work done in one country can have ripple affects across the globe. ATM manufactures distribute their technology around the world, and slowly, slowly this technology is becoming more accessible everywhere. Today’s news brought word of the first Talking ATMs in Semarang, Central Java and Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia. The full news report, which first appeared in the Jakarta Post, is reprinted below. ATM for the Blind Launched in Semarang

Jakarta, Indonesia (April 25, 2102) An audio-based ATM designed specifically for visually impaired people has been launched in Semarang, Central Java.

Devianto Setiorahardjo, a representative of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) Indonesia for Central Java, said Tuesday that the machine, known as a “talking ATM”, is intended for visually impaired customers as well as customers who prefer audio guides, reported kompas.com.

He added that an employee could also assist customers with special needs.

“We are optimistic that this facility can help people with special needs to do their financial transactions independently,” he said.

Similar machines previously had been launched in Jakarta and Surabaya in East Java.

SCB Indonesia will also launch the machine in Bandung, West Java.

Customers of banks that joined the ATM Bersama network can also use the talking ATM.
